HONOLULU (KHON2) — Waikiki beachgoers were stunned after a railing from a room at the Moana Surfrider hotel in Waikiki fell off the balcony and onto the beach Tuesday afternoon. Ocean Safety were the first ones on the scene, treating two individuals who were injured.

“I was just coming up out of the water and saw the balcony kinda started to rock and then fall,” said Canada visitor Mike Larwood. “It just kind of like let loose and fell down to the one below. You could see it pull the hand railing down with it, kind of tumbled and fell straight down to the ground.”

Honolulu Fire Department responded to the incident at 1:18 p.m. Officials said no one was impacted directly. Treatment of the individuals was transferred from Ocean Safety to EMS. One person “suffered minor injury while getting away from the falling railing.”

“There was a woman directly under, so we were all screaming, ‘Move, Move!’ It was happening in slow motion, she luckily got out of the way,” said UH student and bystander Nico Staehle. “It really was a crazy situation.”
