Malibu Beach House Balcony Collapse: at least two in critical condition

A Malibu beach house that was rented for a maximum of six guests was packed with as many as 30 people on Saturday, May 8th.

Neighbors had reported this to the owner, who was in the process of contacting the renters when the balcony collapsed at approximately 5:30 pm. Video posted to social media shows the shocking moment when the balcony collapsed.

A crowd of people were on the balcony when it collapsed and victims fell between 10-15 feet before hitting the rocks below, according to an L.A. County Fire Department spokesman. Two people were in critical condition on Saturday afternoon with approximately 4-9 additional guests suffering minor to moderate injuries from the fall. The victims were evacuated off Malibu beach and two were taken to trauma centers, authorities said. The house has now been declared uninhabitable by the Fire Department.

Don’t Let This Happen to You!

After the tragic deaths of six UC Berkeley students in 2015, due to the collapse of a balcony, SB 721 was signed into law in California. Owners have until January 1, 2025, to complete the first inspection. But the longer that property owners and managers delay inspections and repairs, the more opportunities exist for further damage to occur. Greater damage equals a higher failure potential and a much higher cost of repair—not to mention the risk to human lives. No owner would wish their property to become the next catastrophic failure to make the headlines.
